This monograph is a sequel and companion volume to Gatherings (Pointed Leaf Press, 2013), the lavishly illustrated overview of Janet Ruttenbergs art to coincide with the rst exhibition of her Central Park paintings. With this unprecedented exhibition at the Museum of the City of New York, Ruttenberg presented herself as a contemporary artist after decades of working privately. Ever since, she has expanded the scope of her work, integrating technology into her painting practice, both literally and guratively, as highly innovative collage and framing materials. In her opinion, traditional arts like painting will inevitably expand with the transformative innovations in image making and image sharing at the center of contemporary culture. The fact that some of her recent multimedia works featuring videos and recordings take time to experience in their fullness poses a special challenge to art book design. All of Ruttenbergs works with audiovisual components that are reproduced in this book are marked by special icons to be scanned by a cell phone or tablet, instantly linking the reader to web-based reproductions of the mobilized works that can be considered throughout their full duration. These kinetic reproductions were developed so that a reader can have something like the experience of a viewer fortunate enough to encounter the art in person, who can watch and listen to the videos and soundtracks as they intermingle with the rest of Ruttenbergs rich graphic language, and who can move close to her grand multimedia paintings to appreciate essential small-scale details. Moreover, in consideration of how Rut-tenberg characteristically continues to work on her paintings over years, sometimes decades, any work that turns out to be still in progress at the time of publication will be updated as needed so that a future reader can enjoy its most current state.
